First-Gen Academic Experience Grant
Description:
The student experience outside of the classroom is essential for an enriching and successful college experience. First-Generation Initiatives seeks to support students' development of highly sought-after academic and professional skills that include adaptability, communication, self-awareness, and confidence. The development of these skills often impact students academic performance, retention, and future opportunities for career success. To support first-generation students in funding co-curricular activities, the First-Generation Initiatives team is offering the First-Gen Student Academic Experience Grant.
Purpose:
If awarded the grant, you can use for the following co-curricular experiences:
- Travel to present at a conference
- Training and professional development opportunities
- Study abroad airfare
Not for:
- Financial Hardship
- Students should contact the Dean of Students Office
- Tuition or Textbooks
- Students should visit the TXST One Stop
- Emergency Services
- Students should contact Dean of Students Office
- Personal Expenses
- Students should visit TXST One Stop or Dean of Students
- Division of Academic Affairs - Education Abroad Funding Opportunities
Eligibility:
- Undergraduate students in good academic standing during the semester the funds are requested with a minimum TXST GPA of 2.50
- Enrolled in at least 12 credit hours during the semester the funds are requested
- Must be a first-generation college student
- At TXST, we define first-generation college students as students whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) did not graduate from a 4-year college or university degree in the United States.
- Meet all Texas State University travel regulations (if requesting funds to travel)
Application Requirements:
- Complete the First Gen Proud Funding Application
- First Name
- Last Name
- Preferred Name
- A#
- TXST Email Address
- Classification (freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior)
- Submit a 300-500 word essay addressing the following:
- What would receiving this funding would mean to you as a first-generation college student?
- How does receiving this funding support your personal, academic, and career goals?
Please Note:
- Students who are awarded the grant are required to submit a summary of their Academic Experience and failure to do so will disqualify students from applying for the grant in the next academic year.
- Students are eligible to receive one award per academic year and can be awarded up to $500.

If you are a first-gen student experiencing a technology need, our office has a small amount of laptops available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

I’m First! was created by nonprofit Center for Student Opportunity in 2013 to provide students who lack a family history of higher education with inspiration, information, and support on the road to and through college and is now an initiative of Strive for College—a national nonprofit that also runs a national online mentoring program for college-bound students.
