First-Gen Essay Writing Workshop

This writing workshop is designed for first-generation students, especially those who have not yet taken ENG 1320 or sophomore literature. It is an introduction to academic essay writing, including source use understanding your work as part of a larger conversation, and other common academic conventions. Lunch will be provided to the first 30 students!

Being the first in your family to go to college can feel overwhelming. However, it can also be an opportunity for you and your college to trailblaze and customize a college experience that works for you and people like you. In this keynote address, Dr. Nidia Ruedas-Gracia shows how she harnessed her skills as a first-generation/low-income (FLI) college student to thrive in college and support others like her. Dr. Ruedas-Gracia will share her journey as a FLI college student and how this identity helped her land her current career as an assistant professor. Dr. Ruedas-Gracia will describe her current research on sense of belonging and how it’s designed to foster success among minoritized college students, including FLI students and their different identities.
