Mission

Mission Statement

First Generation Initiatives partners alongside first-generation students and their families to foster academic and personal success.  We provide connections to academic resources, life skills development, and enrichment opportunities that empower students to build and strengthen community while creating a positive learning environment for lifelong success.

Goals

  • Provide student support targeted toward first-generation students and their families to increase college access, create a more robust support system to enhance the sense of belonging and build community for current first gen students, and assist in their academic achievement 
    • Aligns with University Goal 1.1, 1.2, 4.1 & 4.2
  • Increase and improve academic initiatives and programs focused on identifying and addressing student challenges towards the hidden curriculum and assist first gen students navigate higher education (e.g., find internships, connect to resources, services, etc.)
    • Aligns with University Goal 1.1
  • Increase student success measures for first-generation students at Texas State including matriculation, persistence, retention, academic achievement, timely graduation rates, and career success  
    • Aligns with University Goal 1.1  
  • Disseminate knowledge via professional development workshops, communication channels, and through strategic partnerships with educational partners  
    • Aligns with University Goal 2.4, 3.4, and 4.3 
  • Initiate, collaborate and disseminate research that focuses on identifying first-generation student barriers to academic success (e.g., academic preparedness, degree completion, isolation) that could inform early effective interventions
    • Aligns with University Goal 3.3 and 3.4
